C3L and UBD hosts 2nd International Conference for Public Health, Environment, and Education for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) hosted the two-day 2nd International Conference for Public Health, Environment, and Education for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at The Empire Brunei.

Held from 3rd to 4th June 2024, the conference is co-organised by UBD’s Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L), Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS) and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE). The conference convened under the theme “Futuring Together: Integrating Lifelong Learning with Sustainable Practices for Healthier Communities and Environments.” This theme highlights the essence of integrating lifelong learning with sustainable practices, emphasising the importance of health and environment. It resonates with the broader goals of the conference, which includes fostering a multidisciplinary approach to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and encourages collaborative and forward-thinking strategies among professionals, educators, and policymakers to create healthier communities and more sustainable environments.

The conference is also co-hosted by local and international institutions. Local partners include Sustainable Development Goals Unit under the Prime Minister’s Office, Lifelong Learning Centre (L3C) under the Ministry of Education, JPMC College of Health Sciences, and AC-ACE Creative Training Services, Brunei. Meanwhile international partners include Mahidol University, Thailand; Universitas Indonesia; Kagawa University, Japan; University Malaysia Sabah; Sunway University, Malaysia; and Far Eastern University, Philippines.

The opening ceremony held on 3rd June 2024 at The Empire Brunei marked the beginning of the two-day conference, bringing together academics, researchers, and industry professionals from around the globe. UBD Vice-Chancellor Dr Hazri Haji Kifle officiated the conference.

The inaugural event featured keynote speeches by renowned experts: Professor Dr Mohd Ayub Sadiq from UBD and Professor Dr Abdul Karim Alias from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Malaysia. Professor Dr Mohd Ayub Sadiq, a medical statistician with a background in Medicine, Public Health, and Occupational Health, discussed “Digital Transformation in Healthcare.” Meanwhile, Professor Dr Abdul Karim Alias, an expert in Food Technology, spoke on “Harnessing Generative AI for Lifelong Learning.”

The second day of the conference will take place at the Chancellor Hall, UBD, featuring keynote speeches by two distinguished speakers. The first speaker is Professor Takagi Yumiko from Kagawa University, Japan, an expert on environmentally-friendly teaching materials using innovative technologies such as ionic liquids. She will discuss “Proposal on Nutrition Education Research in East Asia Countries- International Contribution through Comparative Study and its Educational Development.” The second speaker is Associate Professor Dr Sarawut Thepanondh from Mahidol University, Thailand. He is an expert on emission inventory and air pollution modelling. Associate Professor Dr Sarawut Thepanondh will discuss “Unified Solutions: Environment, Health, and Climate Synergies for a Sustainable Tomorrow”. Following the keynote addresses, the second day will continue with a series of paper presentations and poster presentation sessions. This segment will showcase groundbreaking research and developments across various fields, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge sharing.

Prior to the opening ceremony, attendees had the opportunity to participate in two pre-conference workshops held from 27th to 28th May and from 29th to 30th May 2024. The two workshops were led by Dr Nimisha Anya Muttiah on “Voice for all: empowering children to communicate” and “AAC Pathways: Unlocking Children’s Communication” respectively. Dr Nimisha Anya Muttiah is an Assistant Professor and a speech-language pathologist from the State University of New York (SUNY), Cortland, United States of America. There will be a post-conference workshop from 5th to 6th June 2024, conducted by one of the keynote speakers, Professor Dr Abdul Karim Alias which will provide participants with insights into “Creating Engaging and Effective Micro-Credentials”.

To enhance the international participants’ experience, the conference also included cultural immersion activities such as a river cruise along Brunei Darussalam’s renowned water village and an introduction to the gulintangan.

In conjunction with Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition (MYCE 2024), the conference serves as a dynamic platform for educators, researchers, policymakers, and lifelong learning advocates around the world to exchange insights on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in integrating lifelong learning with sustainable practices, share best practices, and collaboratively envision a future where education is continuous, inclusive, and purposefully aligned with the global SDGs for healthier communities and environments.

UBD co-hosts 4th AUN-TEPL Symposium

Universiti Brunei Darussalam co-hosts the 4th AUN-TEPL Symposium ” held on 28 and 29 May 2024 at Millennium Hilton Bangkok. Organised by Mahidol University and co-hosted by Singapore Management University, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, and the University of the Philippines, this event provided rich insights and invaluable networking opportunities across the AUN+3 university members in sharing insights and developments of AUN-TEPL collaborative project, forging deeper inter-university collaborations within AUN+3, and deep-diving into the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for personalised learning.

AUN-TEPL is a collaborative initiative aimed at harnessing the potential of technology to innovate and personalise the learning experience across AUN member universities.

Within the theme of ‘AI for Personalised Learning’ –    Dr Hjh Syamimi binti Hj Md Ariff Lim (Deputy Director of Studies, Head of Teaching Learning Centre TLC) participated as a panelist  for the Panel discussion – ‘Empowering Educators: How AI can enhance Teaching and Learning’ to demonstrate UBD’s use of Generative AI tools to enhance student learning and skills for both lecturers and UBD administrative staff. This also includes showcasing UBD’s own development of a GenAI policy for students and staff. The symposium also featured workshops in promoting personalised learning, Dr. Anni @ Nik Ani Afiqah binti Hj Mohamad Tuah (Deputy Director, Centre for Lifelong Learning) ,   and Assoc Prof Dr Mohammad Tazli Azizan delivered a hybrid workshop titled ‘Generative AI and ChatGPT Mastery for Educators’. The workshop session highlighted the ways in which generative AI can be used for lesson content creation in text-to-text applications, tools and text-to-video technologies.

First C3L PhD Student completes Qualifying Assessment (QA)

QUALIFYING ASSESSMENT AT C3L

We are delighted to announce that our PhD student, Wali Khan Monib, successfully completed Qualifying Assessment (QA) on May 7, 2024, at 2:30 pm in the C3L Meeting room, Level 2, ILIA Building, UBD. Following the Proposal Defense (PD), Wali’s accomplishment marks the culmination of months of intensive study and hard-work. Held by the Research and Excellence Monitoring Committee, the assessment aimed to evaluate the student’s readiness and depth of knowledge in the doctoral program.

By guiding students to complete their QAs within the second year of their programs, we aim to identify and address potential challenges early on, ensuring they stay on track towards successful dissertation research and timely graduation. We believe that this assessment process will empower our students to achieve their academic goals efficiently, minimizing unnecessary setbacks and fostering a strong foundation for their future research endeavors.

This significant achievement marks a major milestone in our commitment to supporting students’ progress and timely advancement through their academic programs. We congratulate Wali on this accomplishment and look forward to supporting him further in his academic endeavors

Malay Islamic Monarchy: Impacts on Policy Making seminar held with The Singapore High Commission to Brunei

The Centre for Lifelong Learning organised a seminar entitled ‘Malay Islamic Monarchy: Impacts On Policy Making’. Held on 5th May 2024, the seminar involved the Deputy High Commissioner of The Singapore High Commission to Brunei, officers from the Singapore High Commission as well as sixty public servant officers from the Civil Service College Singapore. The seminar was delivered by Dr Hj Md Rozan bin Dato Hj Md Yunos, Adjunct Professor at C3L and a retired government officer who have also held a number of key positions in different ministries throughout his career. The focus of the presentation was on the history and development of MIB, its implementation and the major role that it plays in the life of the people of Brunei. More importantly the seminar discussed how it impacted policy making in the government. Amongst the goals of the seminar was to present MIB from a more balanced perspective and exploring the nuances of the concept which could help inform the future leaders of the Singapore government in their policy making decisions with regards to their relationship with Brunei.

C3L visits Defence Academy Headquarters, Royal Brunei Armed Forces to expand micro-credentials and lifelong learning programmes

The Centre for Lifelong Learning recently visited the Defence Academy Headquarters, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, for a follow-up discussion on expanding micro-credentials and lifelong learning programmes. This visit builds on our ongoing collaboration, enhancing opportunities for growth and development in both academic and professional realms.

UBD Lecturers attend How to Build a Successful Micro-credential Course hosted by OpenLearning

On 21st and 22nd February, UBD and C3L Lecturers in lifelong learning attended a two-day workshop conducted by OpenLearning on How to Build a Successful Micro-credential Course. The workshop equipped lecturers and staff with skills on how to plan, build and prepare a successful micro-credential course that fosters active participation from learners using tools within the OpenLearning platform.

Advancing Educational Methodologies

The Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) and Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) recently hosted a pivotal discussion with ITIS WESCOT Technology Sdn Bhd, a local company dedicated to advancing educational methodologies. Their collaboration took a significant step forward as they welcomed a trainer from Using Technology Better (UTB), Australia, underscoring their commitment to incorporating global expertise into local initiatives. One of the main focus was to enhance educators’ training, equipping them with cutting-edge technological tools and strategies. The conversation also explored the potential of offering bespoke workshops and creating micro-credential modules that validates skill acquisition. By synergizing their efforts, these entities are poised to revolutionize education, ensuring its adaptability and relevance in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.

UBD Open Day 2024

Centre for Lifelong Learning  participated in the UBD Open Day 2024 held from 3-4th February 2024 at the UBD Library. This event saw academics and staff from all faculties be on hand to answer questions in relation to the programme and lifelong learning courses.

C3L UBD participates in 9th HE Expo

Centre for Lifelong Learning alongside other faculties from UBD were featured at the 9th Higher Education Expo held from 3-4th February 2024 from 9-5pm at Bridex, Jerudong . The education expo is a platform for the public and especially the student, to ask or seek information on the higher education pathways available at UBD Centre for Lifelong Learning – in particular the University Bridging Programme (UniBridge) and lifelong learning courses.

The morning session began with an opening ceremony officiated by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman – Minister of Home Affairs. The Guest of honour visited the UBD booth and Director – AP Dr Jose Hernandez Santos demonstrated the programmes at C3L including University Bridging Programme and micro-credentials.
