The UBD C3L Open Day and Lifelong Learning Festival

23rd November 2023 – The UBD C3L Open Day and Lifelong Learning Festival held at the ILIA Building, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, was an immersive day-long event packed with learning and networking opportunities. The event began with an unveiling of the ‘Portraits of Triumph’ – a wall of portraits of C3L alumni to commemorate their achievements. UBD Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research) Associate Professor Dr Abby Tan Chee Hong, guest of honour was in attendance and the unveiling was officiated by C3L Director Associate Professor Dr Jose Hernandez Santos and Deputy Director Dr Nik Tuah. Participants were immersed in meaningful learning experiences by engaging with lifelong learning and training stakeholders and attending talks – Research AI Skills by C3L Dr Atika Qazi and an alumni sharing session by students from Master of Government and Master of Public Health. The day concluded with a prize-giving and certificate of appreciation for the presenters and stakeholders.

This celebratory installation honors the remarkable achievements and successes of our distinguished alumni, serving as an inspiration for both current and future students and symbolising the importance of lifelong learning.

International Conference for Public Health, Environment, and Education for Sustainable Development Goals and Lifelong Learning

Recently, speakers from C3L, PAPRSB IHS, and SHBIE were among the distinguished attendees at the “International Conference for Public Health, Environment, and Education for Sustainable Development Goals and Lifelong Learning” held at Mahidol University, Thailand. Co-hosted by C3L and PAPRSB IHS, UBD, alongside California State University Long Beach, Asia Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health, Universitas Hasanuddin and Thaksin University – this conference provided a unique platform for researchers, academics, and students to unite in the pursuit of global sustainability.

The event fostered rich discussions, facilitated the dissemination of cutting-edge research, and enabled valuable networking opportunities within their respective domains, all in the service of creating a more sustainable future through international collaboration.

33rd Teachers Day Celebration at the International Conference Centre (ICC)

On Saturday 23rd September 2023, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) through the Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) and Teaching Learning Centre (TLC) held an exhibition in conjunction with the 33rd Teachers Day Celebration at the International Conference Centre (ICC).

For this year’s display, UBD demonstrated three themes in relation to Generative AI (GenAI), Micro-credentials, and Flexible Learning Pathways for Career Advancement.

UBD acknowledges the use of Generative AI tools which have the potential to enhance the effectiveness of educational procedures, customise learning experiences for students, and promote the acquisition of modern teaching and learning skills. UBD must uphold ethical and responsible standards, ensuring transparency and data privacy. As one of Brunei’s premier universities, it has pioneered a comprehensive policy on AI usage in education. This policy equips both educators and students with clear guidelines on harnessing AI for teaching and learning. It serves as a beacon for the UBD community, ensuring effective AI utilization in pedagogy while addressing key challenges such as ethical dilemmas and privacy concerns.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Chancellor of UBD consented to sign a copy of the “Policy & Guidelines on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)” book during a visit to the UBD booth.

Recognizing the evolving needs of professionals, the C3L offers flexible micro-credential modules and lifelong learning programmes, designed for upskilling and reskilling to enhance workplace productivity and career advancement throughout individual’s lifespan. The lifelong learning programmes allow learners to engage at their own pace, offering pathways that recognize and credit prior work experiences and learning combined with stackable micro-credentials towards completion of degrees such as the Bachelor of Science in Digital Economy, Micro-Master of Occupational Health and Safety and Master of Government.

Workshop provides introduction to Generative AI

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) in collaboration with its Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) and the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) recently hosted a workshop on ‘Harnessing Generative AI for Enhanced Productivity’.

The workshop tailored for UBD’s principal officers, aimed to provide the university’s core leadership team with a comprehensive introduction to Generative artificial intelligence (AI) as part of their commitment to embrace technological innovation in education, research, and administration.

Associate Professor at C3L and expert in AI Dr Mohammad Tazli Azizan led the workshop offering UBD’s principal officers an understanding of the capabilities and potential use cases of Generative AI. The interactive sessions provided the officers with insights, equipping them to lead the institution towards seamless technological integration and transformative digital transformation.

The strategic adoption of Generative AI holds the promise of driving efficiency and productivity across various domains within UBD.

The university seeks to deliver an enriched and engaging learning experience for the students, positioning them as future-ready leaders in an increasingly digitised world, by optimising teaching and learning pedagogies, streamlining administrative processes, and enhancing research capabilities.

C3L, UBD Expands Collaborations and Explores Innovative Initiatives

Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) recently went on an educational visit to Thailand to foster collaborations and explore innovative initiatives in the field of lifelong learning. The delegation consisted of Associate Professor Jose Hernandez Santos, Director of C3L, Dr Nik Ani Afiqah Haji Mohamad Tuah, Deputy Director of C3L, and Eni Suriati Hj Abd Rahman, Assistant Registrar of C3L. The visit included engagements with esteemed institutions such as Mahidol University, Burapha University, Thai Oil Company, and Princess Agrarajakumari College of Nursing, Chulabhorn Royal Academy.

C3L is a leading centre for continuing education, professional development, and lifelong learning initiatives. It offers a wide range of programmes, courses, and training opportunities to individuals, professionals, and organizations, empowering lifelong learners with the knowledge and skills necessary for personal and professional growth.

The visit commenced at the Mahidol University’s Faculty of Public Health with discussions on research, joint international conference and related academic activities. This exchange of ideas and experiences aims to enhance lifelong learning practices and strengthen collaborations between the institutions. The C3L delegation then proceeded to the Life-integrated Learning Center at Mahidol University’s Salaya campus, engaging in discussions around lifelong learning initiatives, potential collaborations, and the exploration of mutual opportunities for growth.

The delegation also visited Bumrungrad International Hospital to focus on health, safety, and environment management. This provided an opportunity to explore occupational health and safety practices, particularly in the context of employee clinics and health-related initiatives. Further expanding their collaborations, the delegation visited PTT Asahi Chemical Company Ltd in Rayong Province. The engagement provided insights into industrial lifelong learning practices, knowledge sharing, and potential research opportunities that can benefit both institutions. Meanwhile, the visit to Thai Oil Company in Sriracha, Chonburi, focused on exploring the occupational health nursing clinic in the workplace. This visit highlighted best practices in managing employee health and safety, furthering UBD’s commitment to occupational health and safety initiatives.

The delegation concluded their trip with the visit to Princess Agrarajakumari College of Nursing, Chulabhorn Royal Academy. Discussions with the administrative team, collaborators, and academics revolved around potential collaborations and joint initiatives on lifelong learning facilities and resources available at the institution.

C3L Public Lecture: Research Experience: The Risk Factor for Occupational Contact Dermatitis Among Workers in a medium density fiberboard factory in Eastern Thailand

This lecture aims to share research work on the occupational exposures to formaldehyde on the medium-density fiberboard (MDF) dust and allergic contact dermatitis among the workers at a furniture factory in Thailand.
